IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) is the position where I’m most explicit about the distinction between conviction and certainty. The science is real and the addressable prize — useful, fault-tolerant quantum computing — is enormous. But the timeline is genuinely unknown, the revenue base is tiny, and the losses are large. That combination is the textbook definition of a watch-and-size-small position. This is the honest, in-depth version of why it’s in the book and exactly how I’m holding it.

What “Watching” means for this name
In my framework, Watching is not a weak Bullish. It’s a specific state: a company interesting enough to own in small size while I wait for evidence, with clearly defined things that would move it up (toward Bullish) or out. IonQ is the purest example in the book. I’m not underwriting a five-year DCF here — nobody credibly can. I’m paying a small, defined amount for exposure to a technology that, if it works commercially, is worth many multiples of today, and accepting that it might go to nearly zero if the physics or the economics don’t cooperate.
1 — The technology, explained plainly
IonQ builds quantum computers using trapped ions — individual charged atoms held in place by electromagnetic fields and manipulated with lasers. The advantage of this approach is qubit quality: trapped ions tend to have high fidelity (fewer errors) and all-to-all connectivity, which can mean you need fewer physical qubits to do useful work. The tradeoff is speed and scaling complexity. Competing architectures — superconducting (the big-tech favorite), photonic, and neutral-atom — make different bets. Nobody has yet demonstrated a clearly commercial, fault-tolerant machine. That’s the entire investment tension in one sentence.

2 — Primary research: read the losses, not the hype
The honest financial picture from primary sources: revenue is very small and lumpy (systems sales, cloud access, and government/research contracts), it’s growing fast off a tiny base, and operating losses are enormous relative to revenue because this is essentially funded R&D. Some reported “net income” figures are distorted by non-operating items like changes in the fair value of warrants — I ignore those and look at operating losses and cash burn. The company has historically raised capital to fund the runway. That’s appropriate for a pre-commercial deep-tech company, but it means dilution and cash runway are core to the thesis, not footnotes.

3 — A real wave, an unproven seat
The wave is real but early: quantum could eventually transform chemistry, materials, optimization, and cryptography. The problem for any single company is that the “seat” is not yet defensible because the winning architecture isn’t decided. IonQ’s bet is that trapped-ion fidelity plus a credible scaling path (including networking multiple systems together) gets it to commercial usefulness first or fast-follows. But it’s competing against the deepest-pocketed companies in the world running superconducting and other approaches. This is why the seat gets amber, not green.

4 — The cost curve is a science curve first
For most of my holdings, the cost curve is about margins. For IonQ, the “cost curve” is really an error-rate and scaling curve: can they add algorithmic qubits and drive error rates down fast enough to reach problems worth paying real money to solve, before the cash runs out or a competitor gets there first? Commercial economics come after that. Until the technology crosses the usefulness threshold, revenue will be dominated by research contracts and access fees, not the transformative demand the bull case imagines.
5 — Asymmetry & stance
Stance: Watching. Conviction: Speculative. The asymmetry is deliberately lopsided: small, defined downside (the position can be a near-total loss and it won’t matter to the book) against a large, low-probability, high-magnitude upside if quantum reaches commercial usefulness and IonQ is a winner. That’s a bet I’m happy to make in small size and unwilling to make in large size. The stance moves to Bullish only if the roadmap and early commercial traction start converting probability into evidence.

- Roadmap hits: #AQ scales, error rates fall, networking multiplies capability.
- A genuine commercial use case (chemistry, optimization) starts paying real money.
- Trapped-ion fidelity proves to be the pragmatic path to usefulness.
- Strategic partnerships / government demand validate and fund the build.
Downside case
- Scaling stalls; a competing architecture wins the race.
- Commercial usefulness stays perpetually “a few years away.”
- Repeated dilution erodes ownership as cash burns.
- The whole category de-rates as hype cools before results arrive.

What would move it up — and thesis-break criteria
Moves toward Bullish if: the #AQ roadmap hits on schedule, and a real commercial workload starts generating durable, growing revenue rather than one-off research contracts.
Out / trimmed if:
- The scaling roadmap clearly stalls or a competing architecture demonstrably pulls ahead.
- Cash burn accelerates without commensurate technical progress — dilution with nothing to show.
- The commercial “usefulness” horizon keeps receding with each update.
I’d rather be honest that this is a lottery ticket with a science team attached than dress it up as something it isn’t. Speculative bets get speculative sizing — and a written plan.
